It sounds like you guys just can't figure out how to use it, nor want to, but not everything can be spoon fed to you. The v5 software does what v4 does plus a lot more, but it's still just a forum service, nothing more. Spoon fed to me? not sure how what I said applies to that, I clearly stated I did not like it, I never said "they don't give me this or this" . The fact is I have not even attempted to touch that admin side, not that it's difficult I just have no intentions. I tested the v5 site and the overall layout is just ugly. Every feature (excluding avatar maker) exists on another forum software, not as popular as proboards, but it's still around and doing well. Therefore not real impressed about the new features, because I've heard of them before. "OMG A LIKE BUTTON!!" I"ve never heard of that before. A templating system? heard of it before on other forum softwares. They failed to wow me with incredible features that exist nowhere else, I will admit the Avatar maker is one, but one thing won't wow me or most people. So not sure how anything I said applies to what you said. And in the end (to me) forums are no fun anymore, I can't even say the last time I came on a forum to have a real discussion with friends, If I really wanna talk to someone that bad I'll add them on facebook and talk to them that way. The only forums that are really striving are RP forums, and I don't RP anymore. And if I wanna talk to a group of people I'll make or join a facebook group. I guess it's not the same for non-coders then. For me it's about customization capabilities, and v5 does very well in that aspect. The main "reason" for v5 is the new admin capabilities, it's not really about simple features such as the "like" button. Also, you say it's ugly, but you can customize the hell out of it which is what they intend for you to do. Don't take their design. Comparing them to paid or user hosted forums doesn't make sense either since that's not what they are. Sure, there are some free forums out there that have similar features, but let's be honest, they don't come close to Proboards in number of users, forums, page hits, or user support so they are pretty irrelevant. I definitely agree with you on the fact that forums aren't as big of a deal now, but for me personally, I just like something to figure out and code for. I've never really used Proboards to make friends, I just enjoy coding.

I will admit the customization is nice however. Fair enough, just proves everyone has their own opinions

The templating system may be nice, but until a decent documentation comes out, I probably won't be doing anything. I've made 2 plugins, and to be honest, they're just header and footer codes put into a plugin lol. But whatever; once some things are expound upon, it will be easier to figure out what should be used more often (h&f or a plugin) and template modification with the PB templating engine and such.
